Effects of anatase TiO2 morphology and surface fluorination on environmentally relevant photocatalytic reduction and oxidation reactions

Aiming at clarifying the interplay on TiO2 photoactivity between particle morphology and surface fluorination, photocatalytic performance of anatase nanocrystals, characterized by a pseudo-spherical shape or nanosheet structure, is investigated in both reduction an oxidation reaction, either absence presence added fluoride anions. Cr(VI) strongly favored large exposure {001} facets; however, fluorination leads this case to morphology-independent decrease, due decreased adsorption reaction substrate. More interestingly, beneficial synergistic effect platelet-like clearly outlined Rhodamine B degradation, possibly resulting from intrinsic ability fluorinated facets boosting •OH radical mediated paths, their larger amount –OH groups, as revealed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.

We report a single-particle approach for studying the photocatalytic oxidation reaction on individual anatase TiO(2) particles.
